Sousaphone Is No Tuba

On Oct. 20, you ran photos of the CSUN Marching Band (“Marching to Their Own Music”) saying there were tubas on the ground.

You were wrong.

Those were sousaphones.

Sousaphones, invented in the 1890s by a member of John Philip Sousa’s band, are intended to be carried over the player’s shoulder and are designed in a circle. Tubas are oval-shaped, designed to sit in your lap while you play orchestral music.

They are very hard to carry.
