TENNIS ROUNDUP : Top Players End Upsets at Paris Open
Jim Courier, Stefan Edberg and Goran Ivanisevic ended a rash of upsets at the Paris Open with straight-set victories Thursday and advanced to the quarterfinals.
Courier, seeded No. 1, fought off 13 aces from former Wimbledon champion Michael Stich to win, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.
Edberg, No. 3, rallied to beat American Derrick Rostagno, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (8-6). Edberg saved two set points and came back from 5-1 in the second tiebreaker to win.
No. 6 Ivanisevic eliminated No. 12 Richard Krajicek, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).
In other third-round matches, ninth-seeded Boris Becker defeated Brad Gilbert, 6-2, 6-2; No. 11 Guy Forget beat Arnaud Boetsch, 6-2, 6-4; Jakob Hlasek outlasted Jim Grabb, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2; and David Wheaton defeated Alexander Volkov, 7-5, 6-4.
Henri Leconte continued his run with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Wally Masur. Leconte, serving at 3-2 in the tiebreaker, fell hard approaching the net, came up limping badly and had his foot treated.
Leconte said he will be examined this morning to determine the extent of the injury. He will make a decision on whether he can play in the quarterfinals today against Hlasek.
Forget meets Edberg in another quarterfinal.
Natalia Zvereva of Belarus defeated her former doubles partner, Leila Meshki of Georgia, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5), in a three-hour, six-minute match to advance to the Bank of the West quarterfinals at Oakland.
Also moving into the quarterfinals was Patty Fendick, who beat Brenda Schultz, 6-4, 6-4.
In a night match, top-seeded Monica Seles defeated Stephanie Rehe, 6-4, 6-1. Also, Pam Shriver beat Zina Garrison, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.
