Move the McDonald’s

I would like to correct the misconceptions regarding the location of a McDonald’s restaurant in proximity to an active runway at Oxnard Airport. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assn., on behalf of its 300,000 members, states unequivocally that locating a fast-food restaurant beneath the runway clear zone is inappropriate and an imprudent use of land.

Clearly, a successful McDonald’s operation would rely on customer volume and this expectation would appear to be contrary to the Airport Land Use and General Plan provisions for use of property surrounding the airport. I refer to Oxnard’s 2020 General Plan, which states: “Airport-compatible uses include low-intensity commercial and industrial uses (that do not) subject large numbers of persons to hazards from aircraft.”

Aviation is experiencing its safest year in history. At the same time, freeway driving is renowned for its safety and comfort. Yet, I would not have my children gathering in a runway clear zone for a burger and fries, just as I would not countenance a picnic by the side of a highway.
