Hornaday Sputters to Southwest Title
Ron Hornaday Jr. of Palmdale barely made it to the finish line in Saturday’s 185-lap NASCAR Southwest Tour season-finale at Phoenix International Raceway, but he still came away a winner.
By virtue of a 27th-place finish among 42 drivers, Hornaday, the tour’s points leader for most of the season, won his first Southwest Tour championship in his fifth season on the tour.
On the 111th lap, flying debris cracked the windshield of Hornaday’s Pontiac Trans Am, forcing him to repair the damage with duct tape in the first of several pit stops.
Hornaday, 34, finished 32 points ahead of defending tour champion Rick Carelli of Denver, who finished 12th after crashing with two laps to go. Doug George of Atwater, Calif., finished 21st and fell from second in the standings to third.
