Gold Medal-Winning Gymnasts at Sports Arena Today

One of the largest lineups of gymnastic talent ever assembled stops in San Diego as the Tour of Olympic and World Champion Gymnasts comes to the Sports Arena today from 4 to 7 p.m.

Headlining the troupe are Americans Shannon Miller, winner of five Olympic medals, and Trent Dimas, an individual Olympic gold medalist.

Also featured on the 23-city tour, in its only Southern California stop, are Unified Team members Vitaly Scherbo, winner of a record six gymnastic golds, gold medalist Tatiana Gutsu, silver medalist Grigori Misutin and Svetlana Boguinskaia.

Two-time world champion Kurt Thomas of the United States and American senior national team members Wendy Bruce, Kelly Garrison, Lance Ringnald and Chris Waller also will perform.

FOOTBALL

Palomar College’s Tony Burton, a freshman running back from Fallbrook, rushed 21 times for 161 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Comets to a 34-7 Mission Conference victory over Riverside.

Palomar (6-1, 5-1), ranked 17th nationally and ninth in the state, has won 16 of its past 17 games and 22 of 24.

Burton also caught two passes for 33 yards. His performance was timely. Not only did he take on added responsibilities because of an injury to running back Markeith Ross, but quarterback Tom Luginbill had his poorest performance of the season, throwing for only 129 yards.

David Mallroy intercepted two John Shipp passes and returned one 42 yards for a touchdown to lead San Diego Mesa past Huntington Beach Golden West, 28-12.

Mesa quarterback Anthony Banks completed 14 of 28 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted once.

His main target was Tracy Green, who caught five passes for 81 yards and two touchsowns.

For Golden West (2-5, 1-4 in the Mssion Conference), John Shipp completed 11 of 19 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown, and running back Vance Senteno carried 31 times for 139 yards and a touchdown. He also had three catches for 33 yards and another touchdown

Mesa improved to 2-5, 2-3.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Fourth-seeded Julie McKeon and Laura Richards of the University of San Diego lost their quarterfinal doubles match at the All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades to Deborah Edelman and Rachel Epstein of Indiana, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Kacy Oakley and Aurora Van Sickle had eight kills apiece, and Sunday Renzema had five solo blocks to lift Point Loma Nazarene (17-6, 8-3) to a 15-13, 15-2, 15-10 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Southern California College (14-20, 3-8).

Nikki Wallace had 17 kills and Jennifer Wrightson had 16 to lead USD (15-11, 6-4) to a 15-12, 15-4, 11-15, 15-4 West Coast Conference victory over University of San Francisco (10-11, 2-7).

Jennifer Lofftus and Maria Rickard had 10 kills apiece.

CROSS-COUNTRY

John Castner finished 10th and UC San Diego had five runners in the top 15 to finish second at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships in Pomona. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo won with 22 points, followed by UCSD’s 66. The UCSD women finished fourth, 51 points behind Cal Poly SLO.

WATER POLO

Mike Nalu and Kevin Vance scored four goals apiece to lift eighth-ranked UCSD (19-6) to an 11-5 victory over 10th-ranked Cal State Long Beach (4-14) at the Canyonview Pool. It is UCSD’s third victory in 27 meetings with the 49ers, and the second in a week.

Nalu, a sophomore from Valhalla High, also had four steals.

MEN’S SOCCER

George Evangelidis scored once and dished out the game-winning assist in the 123rd minute to lift Point Loma Nazarene to a 2-1 Golden State Athletic Conference overtime victory over Christ College Irvine. Jonathan Lenarz scored the winning goal. Steve Beck also had an assist. PLNC is 5-8-2, 2-4-2, while CCI is 4-11-1, 1-5-1.

SWIMMING

USD narrowly lost its first meet of the season, 161-140, to host UC Irvine. Hilary Devine was USD’s top performer, taking firsts in the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100 butterfly, and the 200 individual medley. She was also on the winning 200 medley relay. The Toreros’ Molly McGlennen (50 freestyle) and Jennifer Sheldon (100 free) also won.
