HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Santa Fe Christian Pulls Off Upset of Francis Parker

Santa Fe Christian’s defense sacked Scott Schneider on a two-point conversion attempt with 1 1/2 minutes left in the game to preserve a 34-33 upset of first-place Francis Parker in a eight-man Coastal League contest.

The lead changed hands four times and Parker (4-4, 2-1) wiped out a 17-0 first-quarter deficit to take a 21-17 haftime lead. Steve Laputz’s second field goal and a 50-yard pass from Noah Bowman to Ryan Flanders and a two-point conversion pass from Bowman to Daryl Dalton gave SFC (2-6, 1-2) a 34-27 lead.

Parker scored three minutes later on Arturo Pacheco’s three-yard run, but Schneider was sacked while attempting to pass for the two-point conversion. Schneider completed 28 of 55 passes for 361 yards, three touchdowns and was intercepted three times. One of those interceptions was returned 20 yards by Flanders for a touchdown. Flanders had two interceptions.

A week ago, Schneider threw eight touchdown passes in a game for the third time in his career, giving him a San Diego Section record 38. He now has 41 with two games remaining. Schneider also rushed for a touchdown.

Parker recovered the ensuing onside kick, but it was ruled that it was kicked before the official blew his whistle to begin play. The second kick didn’t travel the necessary 10 yards.

Charles Pope had 13 receptions for 162 yards and one score, and Matt Garett caught 10 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns.

Laputz kicked field goals of 40 and 22 yards. Bowman rushed and passed for a touchdown, and Dalton scored on a 51-yard run for SFC.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

After losing its first match of the Hilltop Tournament on Friday, San Dieguito went on a six-match winning streak to claim the championship.

In the title game, San Dieguito slipped by Grossmont, 9-15, 15-11, 15-12, and extracted a bit of revenge for a loss to the Foothillers in the semifinals of the San Pasqual tournament three weeks ago.

In Saturday’s final match, Celeste Taylor led the Mustangs (21-8) with 10 kills, and Susan Lee served wo aces.

USDHS won the third-place match and La Jolla finished fourth.
