Villa Park Boys Upset El Modena in Cross-Country
Villa Park, unranked in the Orange County boys’ cross-country poll, upset No. 10 El Modena at the Century League finals Saturday and earned a share of the league title.
Orange’s Jaime Martinez won the individual title, finishing the three-mile course at Yorba Regional Park in Anaheim Hills in 14 minutes 42 seconds.
Villa Park runners finished in three of the next nine positions and defeated El Modena, 41-51. El Modena defeated Villa Park in a dual meet this season.
Blake Schumacher (15:21), Greg DeClark (15:34) and Jeremy Murdock (15:49) finished second, seventh and ninth for Villa Park.
In the Century League girls’ cross-country finals:
El Modena wins--Canyon’s Kim Nelson outran El Modena’s Christina Dahlberg for the individual title but El Modena won the team title with 31 points to Canyon’s 42. Nelson finished in 18:04, seven seconds ahead of Dahlberg.
In the California State Invitational water polo tournament:
San Clemente 9, Foothill 8--Todd Pelkey scored the go-ahead goal on a breakaway with 13 seconds remaining to give San Clemente (15-8) the victory in the third-place match at DeAnza College. Foothill (14-10), ranked sixth in Orange County, had an 8-5 lead in the third quarter before the third-ranked Tritons rallied.
