NHL ROUNDUP : Montreal’s Roy Wins His 200th
Goaltender Patrick Roy won his 200th NHL game as the Montreal Canadiens used a balanced attack to defeat the New York Rangers, 4-3, Saturday night, stretching their unbeaten string to seven games.
“It’s fun,” said Roy, an eight-year veteran, of his accomplishment. “But the important thing was the win.
“We’re going for first place in our division, and this was a big test. The other thing is just something I’ll remember when my career is over.”
Roy made 31 saves in his milestone game.
Stephan Lebeau, Kevin Haller, Brian Bellows and Mario Roberge scored for Montreal, which moved a point ahead of the Boston Bruins for first place in the Adams Division.
Mike Gartner, who last week passed Montreal Hall-of-Famer Maurice (Rocket) Richard for ninth place on the all-time scoring list, had his ninth and 10th goals of the season for New York to give him 548 in his 14-year career. Gartner needs eight more to tie former Bruin great John Bucyk for eighth place on the all-time list.
Calgary 5, Minnesota 3--Sergei Makarov scored three goals to lead the Flames, who extended their home unbeaten streak against North Stars to 10 games.
Makarov had one goal in the first period and two in the second for his third three-goal game in the NHL. He has six goals in his last three games.
Carey Wilson and Roger Johansson also scored for the Flames.
Minnesota got goals by Todd Elik, Richard Matvichuk and Mark Tinordi.
St. Louis 6, Philadelphia 4--Vitali Prokhorov scored his first three NHL goals, and Brett Hull had a goal and three assists as the Blues won at St. Louis.
The Blues gave Bob Berry a victory in his first game as coach. Berry took over on Thursday after the sudden resignation of Bob Plager, who lasted only 11 games.
The Blues have won three in a row, and the Flyers, who played without Eric Lindros after he was ejected early in the opening period, are have not won in their last six games.
Edmonton 4, Washington 2--Esa Tikkanen’s first goal of the season broke a second-period tie, leading the Oilers at Edmonton.
Tikkanen broke in alone and beat goalie Don Beaupre at 17:07 of the second period, after Edmonton had killed a penalty, to give the Oilers a 3-2 lead.
Scott Mellanby had just stepped from the penalty box and hit a streaking Tikkanen with a pass at center ice. Tikkanen used a head fake to fool Beaupre before tucking the puck between the sprawling goaltender’s legs.
Toronto 3, Detroit 1--Peter Zezel knocked in a rebound for the go-ahead goal at 7:33 of the third period as the Maple Leafs won at Toronto, earning a split of their home-and-home series with the Red Wings.
Zezel won a faceoff to the left of goalie Tim Cheveldae and sent the puck back to Todd Gill at the point. Zezel broke to the net and was behind the defense when he swept the rebound of Gill’s slap shot into the net for his fourth goal of the season, breaking a 1-1 tie.
Quebec 3, Winnipeg 2--Mats Sundin scored two goals and set up another at Quebec as the Nordiques won their third consecutive game.
Sundin had given the Nordiques a 2-0 lead in the first period with a breakaway, short-handed goal against goaltender Rick Tabaracci. Then, after Keith Tkachuk had cut the margin, connecting for the Jets only 35 seconds later, Sundin restored the two-goal lead at 5:38 of the second period with his ninth goal of the season.
New Jersey 5, N.Y. Islanders 3--Randy McKay and Alexander Semak scored goals 1:33 apart early in the third period, snapping a 2-2 tie and giving the Devils a victory at Uniondale, N.Y.
Stephane Richer scored twice for the Devils.
McKay put the Devils ahead, 3-2, at 1:44 of the final period. Semak made it 4-2 at 3:17, taking a pass on left wing from Valeri Zelepukin and firing a 15-footer past Glenn Healy’s pads.
Chicago 3, Boston 2--Dirk Graham’s goal at 11:55 of the third period lifted the Blackhawks at Boston.
Skating in from center ice, Mike Hudson was knocked down but managed to slide the puck to Graham, who beat Boston goalie Reggie Lemelin with a high 20-footer.
Brian Noonan twice tied the score for the Blackhawks with goals at 11:39 of the first period and 3:50 of the third.
Buffalo 2, Ottawa 2--The Senators, after a 12-3 loss on Friday at Buffalo, came back to tie the Sabres at Ottawa.
Ottawa put together a solid effort of tight checking and penalty killing to get their third point of the season after nine consecutive losses.
Jamie Baker had a goal and an assist, Jody Hull scored a goal and Sylvain Turgeon had two assists for Ottawa.
Wayne Presley and Pat LaFontaine scored for Buffalo.
