EAST LOS ANGELES : YMCA, Company Agree on Preschool
The Weingart-East Los Angeles YMCA will open a preschool for 100 children of employees of the East Los Angeles Community Union, an economic development corporation.
The preschool is scheduled to open in about eight months and will be at the corporation’s industrial park, 5400 E. Olympic Blvd., City of Commerce, said YMCA Chairman John Echeveste. The company will provide the space, and the YMCA will train the staff and run the programs.
The school will have 12 staff members trained in early childhood education and child development, said YMCA child-care director Yvonne Alvarez.
“We’re expanding because we’ve had a good deal of success in our child care and it (meets) a real need in the community,” Echeveste said.
As with the YMCA’s existing preschool and after-school programs, which serve 300 children at four Eastside schools, parents at the new site will pay $50 to $80 a week on a sliding scale that is supplemented by grants and other funding, Alvarez said.
The YMCA also operates after-school programs at Kennedy, Belvedere, Breed Street and Farmdale elementary schools. The YMCA is also planning similar programs at Sunrise and Harrison elementary schools, she said.
