Hall of Famers Pee Wee Reese and Duke Snider, O’Malley and former pitcher Ralph Branca joined broadcasters Mel Allen and Vin Scully and scores of Red Barber’s friends and family at a memorial service for the longtime Brooklyn Dodger radio announcer in Tallahassee, Fla.
Barber died Thursday.
Allen, who with Barber became the first broadcasters inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame in 1978, related something he said to his former broadcasting partner on their joint induction.
“I turned to Red and said, ‘The only reason I’m up here ahead of you is they do it alphabetically,”’ Allen said. “The good Lord decided to reverse it this time.”
