BURBANK, PALMDALE : Lockheed Breaks Ground at Complex
Executives of Lockheed Advanced Development Co., paving the way for the relocation of about 2,500 “Skunk Works” employees from Burbank to Palmdale, held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday for two buildings planned for the company’s Plant 10 complex in the Antelope Valley.
Lockheed plans to build a 225,000-square-foot advanced development engineering center and a 72,000-square-foot addition to its metallics fabrication and processing center at the company’s 677-acre site next to U. S. Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale.
The Plant 10 complex, which already includes 41 buildings and 1.8 million square feet of floor space, is the new home of the Lockheed company involved in the development of advanced military aircraft. During World War II, the super-secret design center was nicknamed “the skunk works,” a name taken from a popular comic strip of the time.
Company President Sherm Mullin said the move from Burbank to Palmdale will take two years.
