Habben Helps Whittier Christian to 14-7 Victory

Jon Habben caught four passes for 136 yards, scored a touchdown and made a key interception to help Whittier Christian defeat Cerritos Valley Christian, 14-7, Friday night in an Olympic League game at Whittier College.

Teammate Chad Callahan had a career night passing as he threw for 195 yards, completing eight of his 18 attempts.

Things looked good for the Crusaders (5-0, 1-1) early as they scored a touchdown on their opening drive of the second quarter. It took them one play to go 48 yards when Rick Jones scooted in untouched to give Valley Christian a 7-0 lead with 10:26 left to play in the second quarter.

The Heralds (4-3, 1-1) cut into the lead with a 10-play, 62-yard drive when Myer ran in from one yard out to cut the lead to 7-6 with only eight seconds left in the half.

The Heralds added the final score of the game on a nine-play, 84-yard drive that was capped by a 37-yard touchdown pass to Habben from Callahan. Whittier Christian’s two-point conversion gave the Heralds a 14-7 lead.

The Crusaders had a chance to tie the score in the final minutes, but Habben intercepted a pass to seal the victory.
