FAIRPLEX : Flores Wins Six Races on One Card
Jockey David Flores nursed French-bred Slip With Me to a wire-to-wire victory Sunday at Fairplex Park in the $50,000 E.B. Johnston Stakes, and in the process he became the first rider to win six races on a program in the 54 years at the Los Angeles County Fair.
Slip With Me, trained by Jude Feld, was one of Flores’ easiest victories. The bay filly reached the wire a comfortable six lengths before her nearest rival, odds-on favorite Shrewd Vixen.
The victory was the first in seven starts this year for Slip With Me, who was making her second start after a six-month vacation. Taking the field through fractions of 23 1/5, 46 2/5, 1:11 1/5 and 1:36 1/5, she completed the 1 1/16 miles in a stakes-record 1:42 2/5.
Slip With Me earned $27,500 and has banked $157,886 in a career in which she has won six of 21 starts.
But the afternoon clearly belonged to Flores, who last year rode a record 48 winners during the fair meeting. Of his six winners Sunday, only two were betting favorites.
Slip With Me was the second choice in the E.B. Johnston and returned $8.80 to win. The $2 exacta paid $21.40.
