U.S. rider Lance Armstrong was in the chase for the road race title in the World Cycling Championships at Benirdorm, Spain, when a bystander jumped into his path to snap a photograph, causing Armstrong to crash after nine laps of the 12-lap event.
Italy’s Gianni Bugno won the race, earning his second consecutive world title. Spain’s Miguel Indurain finished sixth and failed in his bid to become only the third rider to win the Tour de France, Tour of Italy and the world title in the same year.
