Wayne Rainey of Norwalk, riding a Yamaha, won the 500cc motorcycle world championship for the third consecutive season when he finished third in the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami near Johannesburg. His U.S. teammate, John Kocinski, won the race and Australian Honda rider and former champion Wayne Gardner was second in his last Grand Prix before retirement.
