Hawaii’s Stewart Captures Bodyboard Championships
Mike Stewart of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, captured the 13th Morey Boogie National Bodyboard Championships on Sunday in Oceanside. Stewart, 29, edged Brian Press, 20, of Palos Verdes in the championship heat, winning $2,000. Press won $1,200. Paul Roach, 19, of Encinitas finished eighth.
Two other area bodyboarders won amateur divisions. George DeMarino, 17, of Carlsbad won the AA/AAA division over Cameron Nelson of Solana Beach, and Russ Boulware, 15, of Oceanside won the boys’ 13-16 division.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
The University of San Diego, playing its first home match its inaugural season, lost to Santa Clara, 2-1. Former Mt. Carmel High player Dawn Birdsall scored for the Toreras, who had two shots on goal.
MEN’S SOCCER
San Diego State’s game against Cal State San Bernardino at 1 p.m. today has been postponed because the Aztecs’ new field has not been completed. Their old home, Aztec Bowl, is being dismantled.
TENNIS
Fourth-seeded Michael O’Day and second-seeded John Cress advanced to the Men’s A singles final of the San Diego District Championships after winning at the Vista Tennis Club. O’Day defeated seventh-seeded Hale Maher, 7-6, 7-5, as Cress, who won the first set, 6-2, and led, 1-0, in the second, advanced when George Lobb retired with an injury.
Third-seeded Barbara Tinsley defeated top-seeded Arlene Jarvis, 6-1, 6-3, and will face unseeded Yuko Hayashi in the Women’s A final. Hayashi defeated No. 4 seed Kara Schanzenback, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
