LOCAL NOTES : Davis and Pate Lose Match at U.S. Open

Scott Davis of Newport Beach and David Pate, who reached last year’s men’s doubles finals at the U.S. Open, were eliminated Sunday by John McEnroe and Michael Stich, the Wimbledon champions, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in a third-round match.

Davis and Pate were seeded 12th, McEnroe and Stich sixth.

Rick Leach of Laguna Beach, the 1988 doubles finalist, and Kelly Jones had more success against McEnroe’s younger brother, Patrick, and Jonathan Stark, advancing with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) victory. Leach and Jones are seeded fourth.

Bob Lutz of San Clemente and Ilie Nastase reached Wednesday’s finals of the masters division men’s doubles, ousting top-seeded Peter Fleming and Hank Pfister, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. Lutz and Nastase, who are seeded fourth, will face third-seeded Paul McNamee and Tomas Smid, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 winners over second-seeded Sherwood Stewart and Dick Stockton in the other semifinal.

Trevor Kronemann, a former UC Irvine standout, and Ginger Helgeson upset eighth-seeded Rachel McQuillan and David MacPherson, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-2, in a second-round mixed-doubles match.

John Morgan of Huntington Beach won the 50-meter freestyle event at the Paralympic Games in Barcelona.

Morgan, who is blind, won the 50 free in 26.58 seconds and also finished second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:49.66.

The Paralympics are an international competition for the disabled.
