Noureddine Morceli of Algeria, one of the big disappointments at the Barcelona Olympics, broke the world record for 1,500 meters Sunday with a time of 3:28.86 at an international track and field meet at Rieti, Italy.

Morceli’s time broke the record of 3:29.46, set by Said Aouita of Morocco in 1985.
