Solzhenitsyn Said to Plan Return to Russia
NEW YORK — Writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who has lived in exile in the United States for the past 18 years, intends to return to Russia early next year, U.S. News & World Report said Sunday.
The magazine said Solzhenitsyn’s wife has located a home for the couple outside Moscow.
It quoted friends as saying that before Solzhenitsyn leaves, he wants to finish writing a book on the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution.
The magazine cited the friends as saying the writer has decided not to sell his Vermont estate, however, in case he finds it difficult to work in the glare of publicity or he finds the post-Communist politics of his homeland distasteful.
Solzhenitsyn, who received the 1970 Nobel Prize for Literature, was banished by the former Soviet Union in 1974.
