ROUNDUP : Arizona State Sweeps CSUN in Volleyball Title Match

The Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team could not overcome 25 hitting errors and Arizona State swept the Matadors, 15-8, 15-9, 15-7, Saturday night in the championship match of the Arizona State Labor Day tournament.

Arizona State, which came from behind in each game, finished the five-team tournament with a 4-0 record. Northridge was 3-1.

The Matadors (3-2), who easily defeated Western Illinois, 15-4, 15-9, 15-6, in an earlier match Saturday, suffered from their worst hitting performance of the season against the Sun Devils. Northridge’s hitting percentage of .047 was lower than the dismal .062 the Matadors posted against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in their season opener Tuesday.

Northridge’s Dawn Krenik and Missy Clements each had eight kills against Arizona State, but neither hit better than .125.

Against Western Illinois, senior middle blocker Nancy Nicholls recorded a match-high 13 kills and had a hitting percentage of .423.

MEN’S SOCCER

UC Irvine 1, The Master’s 0--Kevin Smith scored 15 minutes into the first half and Chris Taylor made two saves for the host Anteaters in a nonconference opener.

Bryan Crosson had five saves for Master’s, which advanced to last year’s NAIA tournament in Boca Raton, La.

Cal Lutheran 0, Cal Poly Pomona 0--The teams combined for 20 shots on goal in the nonconference opener at Cal Lutheran.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Cal Poly Pomona 1, Cal Lutheran 0--Jennifer Graber’s goal late in the first half was the difference in the Broncos’ victory over host Cal Lutheran in a nonconference opener.

“We had so many new people in the lineup today, that it was hard for the team to gel,” Cal Lutheran Coach George Kuntz said.

“When they scored . . . I think I had five freshmen in the lineup because our starters needed a breather.”
