Davenport Trails, Po Wins at Open
Lindsay Davenport’s day in the U.S. Open spotlight in New York City was dimmed by Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and the rain Thursday, but Kimberly Po’s hopes of advancing were improved greatly by tournament’s biggest upset.
Davenport trailed the fifth-seeded Sanchez Vicario, 6-2, 3-0, when the second-round singles match was suspended because of rain. It is scheduled to be resumed today.
The 16-year-old from Palos Verdes was also scheduled to play in a mixed doubles match in the evening session on the grandstand court. That match has been rescheduled for today.
Po, a Rolling Hills resident, defeated Nicole Arendt of Princeton, N.J., 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (12-10).
Po’s next opponent will be Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria, who upset third-seeded Martina Navratilova, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3.
Nicole London of Rolling Hills Estates, the third South Bay player competing in women’s singles, was eliminated by Rachel McQuillan of Australia, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
