CHESS RESULTS : Fischer, Spassky Play to a Draw in Second Game
The second game of the “Revenge Match of the Century” between former world chess champions Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky ended Thursday in a draw after 59 moves and about 6 1/2 hours of play in Sveti Stefan, Yugoslavia. Fischer leads the match, 1-0, with one draw.
Spassky, who lost Wednesday’s game because of overly passive play, took the offensive Thursday. With an unexpected pawn sacrifice at move 18, he forced Fischer to defend. But Fischer managed to reach an end game with an extra pawn, and Spassky had to fight hard to draw.
The third game is scheduled Saturday. The match will continue until one player wins 10 games.
