Weicker, Activists Outline Plans for Independent Party
HARTFORD, Conn. — Connecticut Gov. Lowell P. Weicker Jr. and political activists from around the nation said Thursday they will establish an Independence Party to revitalize the political system.
“We are launching a new American revolution to restore competition to a political system now paralyzed by the Republican and Democratic parties--the Republi-crat monopoly,” said businessman Gordon Black, a party founder.
Black, of Rochester, N.Y., was among 36 political activists--including Weicker and 1980 independent presidential candidate John B. Anderson--who met in the Chicago area this week.
Organizers plan to launch their party officially with the Federal Election Commission within a week and meet in Washington later this month.
