WEEKEND TV : Spoof on HBO; KTLA Eyes Social Woes
Television takes both a comic and sober look at some of the more daunting issues of our time.
The funny stuff starts tonight at 10:30 as HBO’s “Dream On” begins another season with a spoof on politicians, adultery and a prying press. Teri Garr and George Hamilton guest star, along with real-life objects of scandal--Gennifer Flowers, Jessica Hahn and Rita Jenrette--who all impersonate reporters trying to get to the bottom of the adulterous affair between a Senate candidate’s wife and the series’ hapless protagonist, Martin Tupper (Brian Benben).
The games continue but the fun stops with “America at Risk: Stealing the Dream,” Sunday at 8 p.m. on KTLA Channel 5, the second of four syndicated specials that focus on the nation’s social woes. This installment uses surveillance video and re-enactments to expose cases of fraud, real estate scams, contract swindles and con games that cheat the elderly out of their life savings.
And at 9 p.m. Sunday, Spanish-language station KMEX Channel 34 will broadcast “Nuestras Voces” (Our Voices), a two-hour town meeting that will link audiences in Los Angeles, Miami, New York and San Antonio. Participants in each city will grapple with major issues facing the nation and the Latino community in this election year, including: education, health care, drugs, crime and political and economic empowerment for Latinos across the country.
