Dieter Baumann of Germany and Charity Opara of Nigeria had world-best times at an IAAF track meet in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia. Baumann was timed in 7 minutes 43.19 seconds in winning the 3,000 meters. Opara won the 400 meters in 49.86 and set an African record, becoming the first African woman to break 50 seconds. Michael Johnson of Houston won the 400 in 44.36 seconds and Linford Christie of Britain ran a European best this season, winning the 100 meters in 10.17.
