Westchester Is No Match for Tough El Segundo, 6-2 : Baseball: The Eagles look impressive in 6-2 victory. El Segundo finishes the regular season 26-2.
Top-ranked El Segundo High put the finishing touches on an impressive season by defeating Westchester, 6-2, in the championship game of the Redondo baseball tournament Saturday night at Redondo.
And in doing so, the Eagles (26-2) also settled any debate about who is the South Bay’s top team. El Segundo came into the game ranked No. 1, just ahead of Westchester, which fell to 19-6.
Starter Hauss Hancock worked 6 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and striking out four. But Hancock (4-1) lost the shutout by giving up a homer to Rodney Washington to start the seventh, then surrendered a chance for the complete game by walking the bases loaded. Reliever Tracy McAndrew came on to record the final two outs.
Catcher Jeff Poor had two hits and picked off two runners and designated hitter Ryan McCloskey tripled in two runs.
The Eagles pushed across three runs in the second and fourth innings.
Poor singled to open the second inning and moved over when McAndrew walked. McCloskey drove them home with a triple to right-center, then scored on right fielder David Scanlan’s single.
Third baseman Lawrence Norris led off the fourth with a single, went to third on shortstop Al Watson’s error, then came home on Marco Estrada’s sacrifice fly.
It looked as if the Comets would escape further damage when Ben Anderson tapped weakly to the pitcher with the bases loaded. But after Tim Taylor threw home to force the runner, catcher Washington flung the ball into right field, allowing two more runs to score.
Westchester used four pitchers, starting with Andy Spencer (6-3), who gave up three hits and walked two in two innings of work.
Taylor and Richard Sturm also worked two innings each and Billy Woodsmall came in to pitch the seventh.
Prior to the seventh, the Comets had managed to get a runner as far as third only once. But they also had several scoring opportunities and stranded 10 runners.
El Segundo now gets ready for the Southern Section 2-A Division playoffs. Westchester wraps up its season on Tuesday at University in a game that will determine the City Section Western League champion.
