HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Harvard Earns Playoff Berth With 3-0 Win
Harvard-Westlake High earned a berth in the Southern Section 3-A Division baseball playoffs Saturday with a 3-0 victory over host La Salle in a San Fernando League third-place tiebreaker.
Adam Richards and Greg Peters combined on a one-hitter for Harvard.
Harvard’s Rian O’Meara extended his hitting streak to 18 games.
Richards’ two-out single in the third inning drove in Brian Given and O’Meara to give Harvard (14-11 overall) a 2-0 lead. Todd Lemkin’s second home run, in the sixth, accounted for the final run.
Peters relieved Richards (4-5) with one on and none out in the sixth. He retired the next three batters and finished with six strikeouts in two innings.
He pitched out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the seventh. After hitting two batters and walking a third, Peters struck out cleanup hitter Dan Miyake to earn his second save.
La Salle (8-13 overall) and Harvard tied for third with 5-5 records.
Harvard set a season high for victories in Jim Brink’s 13 years as coach.
Royal 7-14, Moorpark 1-3--The Highlanders (18-7) took advantage of 22 walks and swept host Moorpark (17-4) in a nonleague doubleheader. Royal turned 16 walks and nine hits into an easy win in the second game.
Moorpark’s Ken Ditto (7-1), a junior right-hander, gave up seven walks and one hit in 1 2/3 innings. Royal’s Dave Landaker and Shane Slayton each had two hits in the second game, as did the Musketeers’ Richard Hernandez and Eddie Romero.
