Greg LeMond remains the overall leader of the Tour Du Pont.
Michel Zanoli of the Netherlands was ejected from the race Friday after he slugged Davis Phinney of Boulder, Colo., in the nose with the back of his fist about 400 yards from the finish.
Zanoli, a 6-foot-6, 200-pound sprinting specialist, was fined $662 and stripped of all money and merchandise earned in the first eight stages. During the seventh stage, Zanoli was issued a warning after punching a television cameraman who had knocked over a teammate.
Two stages remain in the 1,000-mile race that began May 7 in Wilmington, Del. The field will negotiate the 82-mile Richmond circuit race today, followed by 13.7-mile individual time trial Sunday in Washington, D.C.
Atle Kvalsvoll of Norway, LeMond’s “Z” teammate, remains second overall, 0.13 seconds behind LeMond.
