ROUNDUP : Victory Gives Monroe Mid-Valley Title

Jorge Dorado threw a five-hitter, struck out nine and walked one to lead Monroe High to a 7-3 victory over visiting Van Nuys in a Mid-Valley League game Wednesday. The win clinched the league title for the Vikings (13-3-1, 11-2 in league play).

Leading, 4-3, Monroe broke the game open with a three-run fifth inning. Christian Ascencio’s one-out single drove in two runs and he later scored the Vikings’ final run.

Marco Alvarado was three for four and scored a run for Monroe.

In other baseball games:

Granada Hills 6, San Fernando 0--Sam Voita hit a grand slam in the first and Gary Matthews had a two-run shot in the fifth to power host Granada Hills in a North Valley League game.

Matt Livingston (6-2) pitched a three-hitter, struck out 10 and walked five for the Highlanders (15-4, 10-4).

Sylmar 8, North Hollywood 3--Andy Camarillo had two hits and drove in a run for host Sylmar (10-10, 8-5), which had only five hits but took advantage of five errors in a East Valley League game.

Kennedy 5, Cleveland 3--Joe Bernas was three for three with three runs and two stolen bases to lead visiting Kennedy (16-7, 9-5) in a North Valley League game. Miguel Diaz (5-1) went the distance for Kennedy.

Manny Valencia had two hits and three runs batted in, and Dave Cipolla added two hits for Cleveland (9-9-1, 5-9).

Palmdale 8, Canyon 2--Todd Barry (5-2) struck out six and walked one and Chris Paxton added two hits and an RBI for host Palmdale (11-9, 6-5) in a Golden League game. Teammate Luis Alcaraz had two hits and two RBIs.

Hoover 12, Muir 4--Joby Lewis was two for four with a homer and four RBIs for the host Tornadoes (10-7-1, 5-6-1) in a Pacific League game. Gabe Enriquez was two for four with an RBI and two runs and Andrew Spencer was two for three with an RBI.

Birmingham 11, Canoga Park 7--Gilbert Reyes was three for four with two RBIs and two runs to guide the host Braves (4-14, 4-9) to a Mid-Valley League win.

Brett Ermilo was three for four and Lester Echeverria had three RBIs for Birmingham. David Krieder was two for three for Canoga Park (2-14, 2-11).

Mesrobian 11, Valley Torah 0--David Khachekian threw a no-hitter and struck out 15 to guide the host Bulldogs (4-3, 3-3) to a Valley League win.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 9-7, Pomona-Pitzer 1-3--Stacy Donaldson won both games for visiting Cal Lutheran (29-13, 18-4), which clinched the Southern California Interscholastic Athletic Conference title. Donaldson, a freshman, allowed six hits in 13 innings.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Notre Dame d. Bishop Montgomery, 15-11, 15-13, 15-4--Morgan Hay had 15 kills and Tom Stillwell added 10 kills and four blocks to help the host Knights (14-1, 11-1) clinch a share of the Mission League title.

Crespi d. St. Paul, 15-8, 15-5, 15-7--Mike Lees had 17 kills and Cass Smith added 12 to give host Crespi (11-3, 11-1) a tie for the Mission League title.

TENNIS

Burbank 12, Schurr 6--Burbank (17-2, 9-0), ranked sixth in the Southern Section 3-A Division, clinched its fifth consecutive Foothill League title and won its 25th league match in a row.

Doug Young, Burbank’s No. 1 singles player, improved to 27-0 in league sets and 36-4 this season. Burbank’s No. 2 doubles team of Mike Murray and Phil Cano improved to 27-0 in league matches.

SOFTBALL

Saugus 7, Burroughs Ridgecrest 1--Kerry Coudry threw a five-hitter and improved to 17-1 to lead visiting Saugus (21-1, 7-0) in a Golden League game.

Thousand Oaks 7, Channel Islands 0--Carrie Russell threw a three-hitter, struck out 10 and walked none for Thousand Oaks (17-4, 11-1) in a Marmonte League game.

Simi Valley 2, Newbury Park 1--The Pioneers (21-2, 12-1) scored its runs in the second inning against host Newbury Park (9-10, 5-6) in a Marmonte League game.

Canyon 7, Antelope Valley 1--Marianne Winchester and Kristin Mills combined on a four-hitter and Keri Lemasters hit a home run for visiting Canyon (12-6, 3-4) in a Golden League game.

North Hollywood 24, Grant 18--Rachel Fogelhut was six for seven and Evelyn Calderon had three hits and drove in six runs for North Hollywood (6-8, 4-2) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game.

Canoga Park 1, Birmingham 0--Jacque Stafford pitched a three-hitter to lead Canoga Park (7-3, 7-3) in a Mid-Valley League game.

Sylmar 7, Van Nuys 0--Ruby Gonzalez (10-0) hurled a four-hitter and struck out 11 to spark the host Spartans (15-3, 10-0) to their third straight undefeated season in the Valley Pac-8 Conference.

Hart 25, Alhambra 1--Amanda Deutschman hit for the cycle and drove in eight runs for Hart (14-6, 8-0) in a Foothill League rout.

Quartz Hill 7, Palmdale 1--Lolita Allen had three hits for visiting Quartz Hill (6-1 in league play).

Taft 6, Chatsworth 5--Lisa Seltzer doubled, tripled and drove in two runs for host Chatsworth (8-6, 1-5) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.

Oak Park 10, Carpinteria 3--Stephanie Warman and Jill Cassidy each had two hits for host Oak Park (6-8, 4-4) in a Tri-Valley League game.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Frontier League championships--Mark Whetz captured both the 50 and 100 boys’ freestyle events and also helped host Calabasas win the 400 freestyle relay as the Coyotes cruised to the league title. In the girls’ finals, Calabasas outlasted Nordhoff for the title, 412-258.

Channel League diving championships--Buena’s Leonard Acosta won the boys’ meet with 354.4 points and Rio Mesa’s Linda Van Slyke won the girls’ meet with 341.15 at Ventura College.
