GOLF : Standly Leads by One in Atlanta

Second-year PGA Tour player Mike Standly shot a five-under-par 67 that stood up throughout a cold, rainy day Thursday for a one-shot lead in the first round of the Atlanta Classic at Marietta, Ga.

Playing in the first threesome off the 10th tee, Standly’s round included seven birdies and two bogeys in 40-degree weather.

He held his slim lead over five players at 68, including an amateur, Georgia Tech’s David Duval, defending champion Corey Pavin and Don Pooley, a 16-year veteran in his first tournament since undergoing neck surgery in January.

Jim McGovern and Marco Dawson also had 68s.

Pavin used an eagle-two on the 340-yard seventh hole to highlight a round of 68. He holed a seven-iron from 97 yards, the third time this year he has eagled, including an ace in the Masters.

Standly, whose best finish on the tour was a tie for second at New Orleans last month, had four consecutive birdies after the first of his two bogeys.
