Texas Instruments Unveils Super Chip: Texas Instruments Inc. unveiled a long-awaited super chip that is expected to heat up the already competitive market for workstation computers. The SuperSPARC chip was co-developed with Sun Microsystems Inc., which has been looking for a boost to shore up its world lead in workstations. The new chip comes packed with 3.1 million transistors and is designed to replace a set of 12 chips in Sun’s existing line of workstations. The chip is said to run at a clock speed of 40 megahertz, delivering 150 million instructions per second, or three times as fast as current personal computers.
