Chargers to Conduct Second Mini-Camp
The Chargers will conduct their second mini-camp under Coach Bobby Ross Friday through Sunday at the San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium practice field.
All 13 draft choices and most veterans are expected to participate. The 15 unsigned veterans are not obliged to attend.
All workouts are open to the public. Practice times will be 10:15 to noon and 4:10-5:50 on Friday and Saturday. The Chargers will work out once on Sunday, from 10:15 to noon.
TENNIS
University of San Diego sophomores Laura Richards and Julie McKeon were invited to participate in the NCAA women’s individual singles and doubles tennis tournament, which begins May 18 at Stanford. Richards is 24-6 in singles and ranked 24th nationally. McKeon is 26-5 and ranked 31st. The doubles team of Richards and McKeon is 15-5 and ranked 15th.
USD senior Jose Luis Noriega, ranked second in the nation in singles, was invited to the men’s singles tournament in Athens, Ga., on May 19.
Point Loma Nazarene will play host to the NAIA District 3 men’s tennis tournament today through Saturday. Play begins each day at 9 a.m. Cal Baptist (16-5), which has beaten PLNC (16-4) twice this season, is favored to win the district.
HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL
Kirk Hipple, who averaged 16.4 points per game this season for Rancho Bernardo, has signed a national letter of intent to attend Baker (Kan.) University.
Hipple, Rancho Bernardo’s 6-6 center, received a combined athletic and academic scholarship covering the cost of his tuition.
BASEBALL
Brock Marsh of Point Loma Nazarene has been named the third baseman on the Golden State Athletic Conference first team. Marsh, from Poway, is the only freshman named. He batted .379 in conference play and .290 overall with 13 doubles, six home runs and 29 RBIs.
