OUTLOOK
With a well-balanced team that features seven returning starters, Clifton sees the Minutemen challenging for the Academy League championship. Leading the way are Zaky, who batted .435 as the designated hitter and part-time first baseman last season, and all-leaguer Anderson, the speedy center fielder who batted .419. Anderson enters the season with 66 consecutive stolen bases. That, however, is not even close to the school record. “Brian James stole 98 in a row for us before he got caught trying to steal home in his next-to-last game as a senior in 1988,” Clifton said. All-leaguers Gilliam (.346) and Hoggatt (.361) also are solid at the plate. The suspect department for the Minutemen, Clifton said, is pitching. “Our pitching is still thin, but if Caruso and Church come along, we will be in good shape,” Clifton said.
