TENNIS ROUNDUP : Lendl Falls at Rotterdam; Edberg, McEnroe Win
Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia suffered a straight-set defeat Wednesday in a World Tennis tournament at Rotterdam.
Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands beat the third-seeded Lendl, 6-1, 7-5, in a second-round match.
Lendl, ranked No. 8 in the world, failed couldn’t handle Haarhuis’ accurate returns and passing shots.
“I played good tennis. I kept my head and didn’t give him a chance to get back into the match,” Haarhuis, 36th in the world, said.
Lendl declined to be interviewed.
Top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden faced more resistance than expected from Germany’s Patrick Baur, but eventually won a first-round encounter, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).
In another opening-round match, Sweden’s Jan Apell beat No. 4 Omar Camporese, 6-4, 6-2.
Sixth-seeded John McEnroe advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 victory over David Prinosil of Germany.
Marc Rosset of Switzerland served 16 aces and upset second-seeded Andre Agassi, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), in the second round of the $260,000 Purex tournament at Scottsdale, Ariz.
Agassi has played only two other tournaments this year. He lost in the first round in Milan and the second in Brussels.
Agassi, the world’s 13th-ranked player, took a 3-0 lead before Rosset, ranked No. 56, broke back in the fifth and 11th games and held serve to close out the set.
Agassi broke Rosset’s serve in the eighth game of the second set, but was broken right back. Rosset held with a game-ending ace, then had three more in the 12th game to force the tiebreaker.
In other second-round matches, eighth-seeded Andrei Chesnokov of Russia defeated Dinu Pescariu of Romania, 7-5, 6-0; Cristiano Caratti of Italy downed Jamie Oncins of Brazil, 6-4, 6-1, and Stefano Pescosolido of Italy beat Maurice Ruah of Venezuela, 6-3, 6-4.
