Corona del Mar Scares Estancia
Estancia, ranked fifth in the county, trailed much of the game and was forced into overtime by unranked Corona del Mar before gaining a 52-48 victory Wednesday in nonleague boys’ basketball.
Jim Faulkner made a three-point shot for the Eagles with 21 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. Estancia (16-5) made five of six free throws in overtime, including four by Matt Fuerbringer to seal the victory. The Sea Kings lost their ninth in a row. Fuerbringer scored a game-high 20 points.
Corona del Mar (8-11) led by as many as 10 points in the first half and still led 46-43 with a minute remaining in regulation.
Chris Quinn had 16 points and six rebounds and Todd Merriman had 10 points for the Sea Kings.
