COLLEGE BASKETBALL / NATIONAL ROUNDUP : Junior Pelinka Leads Michigan in Victory
Those who came to East Lansing, Mich., expecting to see Michigan’s famous five freshmen got a bonus: a seldom-used junior who led the Wolverines in an 89-79 overtime victory over Michigan State.
Rob Pelinka scored six of his career-high nine points in overtime Wednesday night as No. 15 Michigan (12-4, 4-3 in the Big Ten), down 14 points in the second half, beat the No. 13 Spartans (13-3, 3-3).
“It’s scary,” Michigan State Coach Jud Heathcote said. “If we can’t win a game against Michigan when we have a 14-point lead, I don’t know what to do.”
No. 14 Kentucky 96, Mississippi 78--Jamal Mashburn scored 24 points to help the Wildcats win a Southeastern Conference game at home. Kentucky (15-4, 5-2) jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first 3 1/2 minutes and never looked back at Mississippi (8-9, 1-5).
No. 18 Oklahoma 110, Texas Southern 85--Damon Patterson scored 23 points and Angelo Hamilton added a career-high 21 for the Sooners, who won at home.
Oklahoma (14-3) shot only 41% from the field against Texas Southern (8-11).

Elmer Bennett scored a game-high 32 points, 20 of them in the second half, as Notre Dame (7-8) scored a 74-69 victory over DePaul (11-6) at South Bend, Ind. . . . Bryant Stith scored 29 points in Virginia’s (9-8, 3-4) 82-75 victory over Maryland (8-10, 1-7) in the Atlantic Coast Conference in Charlottesville, Va. . . . Rodney Rogers scored a career-high 33 points for Wake Forest (11-5, 4-4) in an 86-73 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over North Carolina State (9-9, 3-4) at Winston-Salem, N.C.
Alonzo Mourning scored 20 points Georgetown (12-4) in its 61-48 Big East victory over St. John’s (10-7) at Landover, Md. . . . Pittsburgh (12-8, 4-3) broke a four-game losing streak in an 82-52 victory over Miami (6-13, 1-8) in a Big East game at Pittsburgh. . . . Shaquille O’Neal scored 30 points and set the Southeastern Conference career record for blocked shots with his 329th as Louisiana State (12-4, 5-1) beat Tennessee (12-7, 4-3) with its inside game at Baton Rouge, La.
Acie Earl scored 21 points and blocked nine shots to lead Iowa (11-5, 3-3) to a 73-66 Big Ten victory over Wisconsin (10-9, 1-5) at Iowa City. . . . Bob Martin scored a career-high 17 points in leading Minnesota (13-7, 5-2) to a 92-50 victory over Northwestern (7-10, 0-7) at Minneapolis. It was Northwestern’s 50th consecutive loss on the road.
Jeff Brown scored 28 points in leading Gonzaga (15-5, 2-3) to an 86-73 victory over Portland (8-10, 1-4) in a West Coast Conference game at Spokane, Wash. . . . Carl Ray Harris scored 25 points to lead Fresno State (13-7, 4-4) to a 76-69 Big West Conference victory over New Mexico State (13-3, 5-2) at Fresno.
