L. A. DECO by Carla Breeze (Rizzoli: $17.95). The angular, streamlined style of the ‘20s and ‘30s is usually associated with New York City, but some outstanding examples of Deco architecture survive in Southern California, including the Moorish Catalina Island Casino in Avalon, the massively elegant I. Magnin (formerly Bullock’s Wilshire) building and the geometric domes of the Griffith Park Observatory. The color photographs emphasize architectural detailing, which ranges from the extravagant ornamentation on the Wiltern Theatre to the bizarre monumentality of Lloyd Wright’s Sowden house. An amusing, if superficial, overview.
