Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON D.C. : Study Says Drug Cuts Breast Cancer Risk

A cancer drug significantly reduces the chances that women who have had cancer in one breast will develop it in the other, a Swedish study published in the current issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute concluded. The study of the drug tamoxifen supports previous research and reinforces researchers’ hopes that the estrogen blocker will inhibit the development of cancer in healthy women. Women taking the drug reduced by 40% the risk of getting cancer in the other breast.
