Wendell Cherry, 55, founder of Humana Inc., which operates a nationwide chain of hospitals and provides health insurance for 1.6 million Americans. Cherry founded Humana with David A. Jones in 1961. An attorney, he also was an avid art collector who once paid $5.3 million for a self-portrait of Picasso. He also produced Broadway shows, including “The Secret Garden,” and was president of the old American Basketball Assn. In addition he was the lawyer for the group of Louisville sports enthusiasts who first sponsored Cassius Clay, later Muhammad Ali, who was world heavyweight boxing champion. In Louisville on July 16 of lung cancer.
