Locked Up: Horror writer Stephen King, whose wife recently confronted an intruder in their mansion, is reluctantly increasing his home security. “I don’t want to live like Michael Jackson or like Elvis did at Graceland,” he said. “That’s gross. It was bad enough when we had to put up a fence. It was worse when we had to put up a gate. I hate to think I have to keep that gate locked.”
Wait, Baby: A woman anxiously waiting to greet her husband at a Cleveland airport when his Coast Guard unit returned Tuesday from the Persian Gulf did not let anything stand in her way--even labor. “I just had to be here,” said Terry Dotson, 27, waiting for her husband, George. Dotson’s contractions began about 1 a.m. but she went to the airport anyway for the 11 a.m. arrival. An ambulance rushed the couple to a hospital, and Dotson had a 7-pound, 12-ounce girl at 4:34 p.m. Both were in good condition.
Call of the Wild: Naturalist Jane Goodall, visiting the Oakland Zoo recently, delighted in the latest improvements there--but she wasn’t totally happy. “I’d rather be sitting in a forest,” Goodall said. “But after seeing how chimps (in captivity) are treated--being killed, sold, studied in labs--that would be selfish of me.”
Czech This: Playboy magazine, once Eastern Europe’s epitome of Western decadence, hits Czech newsstands this weekend. “For me, it is the proof of the freedom this country now enjoys,” the edition’s new publisher, Vladimir Tichy, said Wednesday in Prague. The initial press run is 65,000 copies.
