COLLEGE ROUNDUP : McGuire Homer Leads UCLA Past Fullerton
Ryan McGuire hit his fifth home run of the season to help UCLA defeat Cal State Fullerton, 7-4, in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at Amerige Park in Fullerton.
McGuire’s two-run homer in the fourth and gave the Bruins a 3-2 lead. UCLA (22-22) added two runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Michael Moore and McGuire and scored single runs in the eighth and ninth.
Fullerton (24-20), which had eight hits, also scored single runs in the eighth and ninth--on a sacrifice fly by Trevor Rush and a home run by Phil Nevin. The Titans took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on Frank Charles’ two-run single.
Tim Lindsay (7-3) pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out five to earn the victory and Michael Fyhrie gave up only Nevin’s home run in two innings to earn his fourth save.
Brent Deremer (2-3), one of four Titan pitchers, gave up the two-run homer to McGuire to take the loss.

Cal State Fullerton 9, Utah State 0--Cal State Fullerton won five matches by default. In the other matches: Caroline Sporer won, 6-1, 6-0, Roseann Alva won, 6-0, 6-0, Tracy Spellman won, 6-1, 6-0, and the doubles team of Spellman and Sporer won, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6.
