PREP FLASHBACK : THIS WEEK IN COUNTY PREP SPORTS HISTORY

10 YEARS AGO

St. Louis Cardinal scout Bob Holmes was in the stands when Garden Grove defeated La Quinta, 11-2, in a Garden Grove League baseball game. Foremost among the prospects was Argonaut center fielder Lenny Dykstra, who now plays for the Phillies.

Others were La Quinta pitcher John Rogers, who after playing basketball at UC Irvine and in the NBA now plays professionally in Spain, and teammate Vince Lopez, a defensive whiz at shortstop.

Dykstra lived up to his billing as he doubled, singled, walked three times, stole three bases, scored three runs and had one run batted in. Rogers may have made his decision to stick with basketball that day; he gave up nine runs and nine hits in five innings. Lopez had his usual solid day in the field.

But Holmes also saw a strong performance by Garden Grove senior left-hander Kevin Brown, who pitched a four-hitter, striking out five and walking three, to improve to 6-0 with a 0.73 earned-run average.

“He has two very good curveballs: one slow and one slower,” Holmes said. “And those two pitches make his fastball very effective.”

Healthy and happy: Garden Grove pitcher Jeff Kanagae missed six games with a strained ankle, so when he returned to the Argonauts’ lineup he was worried about reinjuring it. Kanagae taped his ankle and also started wearing a plastic splint during practice as a preventive measure.

“I ruined my season almost,” Kanagae said. “Now I just want to finish the season healthy. Missing those games made me realize how much I miss playing.”

He must have missed it a lot.

In an 11-0 victory over Bolsa Grande, Kanagae pitched a two-hitter, walked two and struck out 11. He also was two for two with a grand slam.

Getting the jump: Magnolia triple-jumper Phouphet Singbandith had three jumps in the Arcadia Invitational that bettered the Orange County record. His first jump set a county record by a quarter of an inch at 50 feet 3 3/4 inches. On his next jump he went 50-10 3/4 for the then-longest jump in the nation last year. His final jump, 51- 3/4, broke the meet record.
