HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Newbury Park Causes Agoura to Cry ‘Uncle’
Bryant Fick allowed only one hit through four innings and his uncle, Robert Fick, was three for three with two runs batted in to lead host Newbury Park High past Agoura, 8-2, Thursday in a Marmonte League baseball game.
Bryant Fick, a junior left-hander, improved to 2-2 and combined with Jason Patterson on a two-hitter.
Robert Fick, a junior catcher who hit two doubles in a loss to Camarillo on Wednesday, was five for five in two games this week and is batting .478 (22 for 46).
Sophomore shortstop David Lamb was three for four with two RBIs and three runs scored for Newbury Park (6-9, 2-3 in league play).
Jason Smith, playing in his second game since undergoing emergency spleen surgery in February, doubled and singled. Jason Cash added two hits and Tighe Harrell hit his third home run for the Panthers.
Agoura, in its first season in the Marmonte League, is 3-9, 0-6 in league play.
In other baseball games:
L. A. Lutheran 15, Coast Christian 9--Kevin Brown had three hits, including two triples, and stole five bases to lead host L.A. Lutheran (8-3, 5-1) in a Heritage League game.
Darren Brown was three for three and drove in three runs for L. A. Lutheran.
SOFTBALL
Crescenta Valley 3, Arcadia 2--Kim Welsh’s bases-loaded single scored two runs in the fifth inning and allowed host Crescenta Valley (16-1, 2-0) to overcome a 1-0 deficit in a Pacific League game.
Stacy Atwood (14-0) limited Arcadia to three hits and struck out 10.
Quartz Hill 4, Saugus 3--Four hits and two Saugus errors allowed the Rebels (8-3, 2-0) to score four runs in the second inning of a Golden League game at Saugus (8-6, 1-1).
Moorpark 4, Oak Park 0--Cara Shea (5-3) tossed a two-hitter and struck out 10 for Moorpark (9-4, 2-0 in league) in a Tri-Valley League game at Oak Park.
Newbury Park 5, Westlake 1--Marcy James rapped two triples and drove in three runs and Sophie Sobol (7-3) went the distance for host Newbury Park (10-4, 3-3) in a Marmonte League game.
Sobol struck out 10 and walked three in pitching a four-hitter.
Village Christian 6, Maranatha 5--Heather Evans’ two-run triple in the sixth inning provided the winning margin in an Alpha League game at Maranatha.
Jana Kovar (4-3) struck out 15 batters and walked two for Village Christian (4-3, 1-1).
L.A. Baptist 10, Montclair Prep 2--Mandee Pagarigan struck out seven and allowed just one hit to lead L. A. Baptist (6-5, 2-1) to an Alpha League win at Montclair Prep. Monica Davis had two hits and four RBIs for the Knights.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Notre Dame d. Chaminade, 15-5, 15-8, 15-11--Morgan Hay had 16 kills and Matt Morgan added 11 for Notre Dame (8-3, 5-2) in a Mission League match.
Chaminade’s Travis Hall had 14 kills and Lars Johnson added nine.
Crespi d. Bishop Montgomery, 15-4, 13-15, 15-12, 9-15, 15-7--Crespi (6-1 in league play) won a match for first place in the Mission League behind Tom Black (22 kills), Marcus Sumner (21 kills) and Frank Romano (20 kills).
BOYS’ TRACK
Westlake 91, Newbury Park 44--Joe Maashoff and David Tetzlaff each won two events to pace the visiting Warriors (5-0) in a Marmonte League meet.
Maashoff won the 120-yard high hurdles in 16.9 seconds and took the 330-yard intermediates in 42.2. Tetzlaff won the pole vault (11-6) and triple jump (39 feet 3/4 inch).
Sean McKeown won the shotput (50-6) and discus (145-7) for Newbury Park (2-3).
