Paramount Pictures Appeals Buchwald Ruling: The studio asked the California appeals court to overturn a key decision against it in its longstanding legal dispute with columnist Art Buchwald and producer Alain Bernheim over the film “Coming to America.” In a writ filed with the second appellate district in Los Angeles, Paramount asked the court to void a preliminary decision by Superior Court Judge Harvey Schneider that has held provisions in Paramount’s contract with Bernheim to be “unconscionable.” If Schneider’s ruling is allowed to stand, the judge will have wide latitude in awarding damages to Buchwald and Bernheim as creators of the film.
