Tenor/Countertenor: Eight young singers, including a countertenor and three tenors, have won the annual Metropolitan Opera Auditions for Young Singers in New York. Brian Asawa, 24, of Los Angeles, was named the countertenor winner at the opera house on Friday. He is believed to be the first countertenor (a vocalist who sings in the female alto register) to win in the auditions’ history. After coaching by the Met staff, the winners will give a concert at the Metropolitan Opera, with the Met Orchestra, on April 14. National Public Radio will tape it for airing later.
