THE SIDELINES : A. J. Foyt Released From Hospital
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A. J. Foyt was released from Charlotte Memorial Hospital today and immediately left for his Houston home.
The 54-year-old Foyt, a four-time Indianapolis 500 winner, was injured Tuesday when he crashed into a wall during a stock car practice session at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He received bruises to his neck and chest and complained of headaches for several days, but no serious injuries were found.
The longtime racing star withdrew from Sunday’s All Pro Auto Parts 500 at the Charlotte track.
Foyt said in a telephone interview before his release: “It’s the first time I’ve had an accident where I don’t remember what happened. . . . Whatever I hit, I hit real hard.”
