USC Guard Pendleton Ineligible, His Career With Trojans Finished

Anthony Pendleton, a starting guard on USC’s basketball team, has been declared academically ineligible for the 1989-90 season, the school announced Monday.

Despite attending summer school, Pendleton failed to pass enough classes to be eligible. Because he would have been a senior with no redshirt year available, Pendleton’s USC athletic career is over. He returned home to Flint, Mich.

The loss of Pendleton, who averaged 15 points and set a school record for three-point shooting last season, is a blow to the Trojans’ program.

“You certainly can’t minimize the loss of (Pendleton),” Coach George Raveling said. “But I have confidence that we’ll be able to pick up the pieces and keep going.

“(Losing Pendleton) means that (incoming freshman guards) Cordell Robinson and Harold Miner will have to step to the forefront sooner. I still feel we can have an outstanding season and are going to have an outstanding season.”
