Issued proclamations designating next week as Days of Rememberance for the Victims of the Holocaust, and the month of May as Neighborhood Watch Crime Prevention Month.
Will hold a ceremony honoring Older Californians Month in Sacramento on Wednesday, and play in Muscular Dystrophy Capitol Classic Charity Golf Tournament in Sacramento on Friday.
Appointed Thomas G. Beermann of Sacramento as his deputy press secretary. Beermann, 30, replaces Donna Lucas, who moved over to the treasurer’s office. He previously served as the governor’s assistant press secretary. The new job pays $45,936 and does not require Senate confirmation.

Boats: Passed and sent to the Senate on a 61-0 vote a bill (AB 162) by Assemblyman Gerald N. Felando (R-San Pedro) to make burglarly of an inhabited vessel first-degree burglary instead of second-degree burglary, and thus subject to a longer sentence.

Political Campaign Advertisements: Passed and sent to the Assembly on a 34-0 vote a bill (SB 545) by Sen. Daniel Boatwright (D-Concord) to require television political campaign commercials to conclude with a prominently displayed, easy-to-read screen notice, plus an audio voice-over, identifying the commercial sponsor.
UC Regent: Confirmed on 35-0 vote the gubernatorial appointment of former Republican Rep. Clair W. Burgener of San Diego to the University of California Board of Regents. Burgener also is a former state legislator.

Oil Company Boycott: Sixteen Democratic state legislators, led by Assemblyman Tom Bates (D-Oakland), endorsed a one-day national consumer boycott of Exxon Oil Co. products on May 2 to protest the Alaskan oil spill and what they called the company’s “inadequate†clean-up efforts. “We want to show Exxon that corporations who harm the environment will pay a price in the marketplace,†Bates said.
Disabled Problems: Assemblywoman Bev Hansen (R-Santa Rosa) will find out on Monday what it’s like to live and work with a physical disability. Hansen will spend the day in a wheelchair, learning to negotiate the space in her office, the halls of the state Capitol and the Assembly floor. She is the honorary national legislative chairwoman of Barrier Awareness Week, which is designed to make the public more conscious of obstacles encountered by people with physical disabilities.
