Medical Researchers Get Cash Awards

Three medical researchers have been honored by the Pasarow Foundation at a Westwood banquet with $35,000 awards for their contributions to the advancement of science.

The awards were presented Thursday evening at the Westwood Marquis Hotel to Dr. Harvey Feigenbaum, professor of medicine at Indiana University of Medicine; Dr. Eric Kandel, Columbia University professor of psychiatry, and Dr. Irving Weissman, Stanford University professor of pathology.

Feigenbaum is credited with the development of the clinical utility of the echocardiogram, used in diagnosing heart disease. Kandel was recognized for his advances in neurophysiology relating to learning and memory. Weissman’s studies in immunology enabled him to isolate and purify the rare stem cells in bone marrow that give rise to red and white blood cells.
