College Basketball Roundup : No. 9 Arizona Embarrasses Washington, 116-61

Sean Elliott and Anthony Cook scored 20 points each Tuesday night and ninth-ranked Arizona routed Washington, 116-61, in a Pacific 10 Conference game at Tucson, Ariz.

The 55-point margin was the largest ever by the Wildcats (5-1 overall, 2-0 in the Pac-10) in a conference game and the 116 points were the most they ever scored in a Pac-10 contest.

Todd Lautenbach scored 21 points for Washington (3-3, 0-1).

Arizona scored the last 20 points of the first half for a 48-15 lead.

South Carolina 74, Ohio State 68--John Hudson and Terry Dozier each hit two free throws in the final 1:17 and the No. 18th Gamecocks held off the No. 12 Buckeyes at Columbia, S.C.

The Buckeyes (6-2) trailed by 13 points in the first half but rallied to tie the score, 68-68, with 1:42 left on a 3-pointer by Jerry Francis, but didn’t score again.

Brent Price scored 25 points for South Carolina (6-0), which is off to its best start since winning the first 7 games of the 1971-72 season.

Michigan 125, Northern Michigan 75--Glen Rice scored 22 of his 36 points in the first half as the No. 2 Wolverines trounced the Wildcats at Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Wolverines (10-0) set a Crisler Arena record for points, topping the 123 they had against Illinois Chicago in 1986, and had a 50-21 rebounding edge.

Damon Tidwell scored 20 points for Northern Michigan (3-5).

Georgetown 87, Virginia Tech 57--Jaren Jackson and Charles Smith each scored 19 points and the sixth-ranked Hoyas overwhelmed the Hokies at Landover, Md.

Virginia Tech (4-3) played without Bimbo Coles, a member of the U.S. Olympic team, who averages 22.5 points per game. Coles and Sam Cannon were suspended for missing curfew Monday night.

Wally Lancaster scored 22 points for Tech. Freshman Alonzo Mourning had 10 points and 6 blocked shots for Georgetown (7-0).

Oklahoma 132, Southern Utah State 64--Mookie Blaylock made a Big Eight-record nine 3-point baskets and scored 33 points as the seventh-ranked Sooners overwhelmed the Thunderbirds at Norman, Okla.

Stacey King added 26 points and 17 rebounds for Oklahoma (7-1), who topped the 100-point mark for the fifth straight game. Terrence Mullins had 18 points, including five 3-pointers.

Roger McDonald scored 16 points for Southern Utah State (3-7).

Florida State 113, South Florida 81--Tony Dawson scored 28 points and Irving Thomas added 18 points and 12 rebounds as the 11th-ranked Gators downed the Bulls at Tallahassee, Fla.

George McCloud added 20 points and 8 assists for the Seminoles (7-0), who surpassed the 100-point mark for the fourth time and boosted their season scoring average to 101 points a game.

Hakim Shahid had 25 points and 17 rebounds for the Bulls (3-1).

Georgia Tech 62, Richmond 50--Anthony Sherrod scored 13 of his 18 points in the second half as the No. 16 Yellow Jackets rallied to beat the Spiders at Richmond.

Richmond (2-5), which knocked Georgia Tech (5-1) out of the NCAA playoffs last season, had a 31-23 halftime lead, but the Yellow Jackets opened the second half with runs of 16-8 and 12-1.

Tennessee 111, Alabama Birmingham 99--Dyron Nix scored 29 points and the No. 19 Volunteers turned back the Blazers in the first round of the San Diego Holiday Tournament.

Alabama Birmingham (5-2) trailed, 73-49, with 15 minutes left before rallying, but got only as close as 91-86.

Doug Roth added 22 for the Volunteers (5-1), while Reginald Turner had 25 points and 10 rebounds for Alabama-Birmingham.

Washington State 65, Arizona State 59--Brian Quinnett scored 24 points and the Cougars made 6 straight free throws in the final 62 seconds to get past the Sun Devils in a Pac-10 game at Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona State (5-2, 0-1) trailed, 55-40, with 8:04 left, but rallied to tie the score, 59-59, on a basket by Trent Edwards with 1:35 left. Edwards had 16 points and 15 rebounds.

Harold Wright made four free throws and Darryl Woods added two as Washington State (5-4, 1-1) held on.

UC Santa Barbara 77, Oregon 64--Carrick DeHart scored 26 points and the Gauchos surprised the Ducks at Eugene, Ore.

UCSB (7-0), which equaled last season’s best start in school history, built a 42-24 lead, but Oregon (3-4) scored the last 9 points of the first half. However, the Gauchos regained control in the second half.

Frank Johnson scored 19 points for Oregon.
